Course Overview: Pinehurst No. 2Pinehurst No. 2 is one of the most storied courses in golf, known for its challenging layout and strategic design. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Location: Pinehurst, North Carolina
  • Par: 70
  • Yardage: 7,543 yards
  • Green Type: Champion Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass
  • Fairway Width: 35-45 yards in landing areas
  • Number of Bunkers: 117
  • Water Hazards: Only one hole with water in play
  • Average Green Size: 6,500 square feet

Course History

  • 2014 US Open: Martin Kaymer won with a score of -9. Notable finishers included Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton, who tied for second at -1.
  • Winning Scores: Historically, winning scores at Pinehurst No. 2 have hovered around par, indicating the course’s difficulty.
  • Past Performers: Players with strong course management and short game skills have thrived here.

Course Insights:

Driving Accuracy vs. Distance

While driving distance can be advantageous, accuracy off the tee is paramount at Pinehurst No. 2. Players who can keep the ball in the fairway and avoid the penal rough and waste areas will set themselves up for better approach shots.

Greens in Regulation

Hitting greens in regulation will be a significant challenge. Players who excel in GIR will have a better chance of scoring well. In 2014, even Martin Kaymer, the winner, didn’t lead in GIR but was proficient enough to gain an edge over the field.

Scrambling and Short Game

The ability to scramble and get up and down from difficult positions cannot be overstated. The turtleback greens will reject poorly struck shots, leading to more missed greens. Elite scramblers will have a distinct advantage.

  • Historical Data: Players like Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, and Jim Furyk, known for their short game prowess, have performed well here.
  • Course Management: Strategic play, focusing on placing the ball in the right spots off the tee and on approach shots, will be crucial.

Putting:

Bermuda greens at Pinehurst No. 2 are among the purest you’ll find. Good putters who can read the subtle breaks and maintain a solid stroke will benefit greatly.

  • Past Performance: Players who have historically putted well on Bermuda greens, such as Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, should be considered strong contenders.

Strategic Takeaways

  • Par 5 Scoring: With only two par 5s on the course, capitalizing on these holes is essential. In 2014, the 5th hole had a high birdie rate, making it a pivotal scoring opportunity.
  • Avoiding Big Numbers: Double bogeys and worse can derail a round. Players need to avoid these by playing conservatively when necessary and managing their game effectively.
  • Weather Impact: Keep an eye on the weather forecast. Wind and rain can significantly affect how Pinehurst No. 2 plays, making already difficult conditions even more challenging.
