MLB DFS Picks Today 8/9/24

When playing MLB DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) on FanDuel and DraftKings, there are several strategies you can employ to increase your chances of success. Here are a few key strategies to consider:

  1. Research and Study: Familiarize yourself with the players, teams, and matchups. Analyze player statistics, recent performance, and factors like weather conditions, ballpark tendencies, and pitching matchups. Stay updated on injury news and lineup changes to make informed decisions.
  2. Focus on Starting Pitching: Starting pitchers have a significant impact on DFS performance. Target pitchers with high strikeout potential, favorable matchups, and a track record of consistent performance. Look for pitchers who can go deep into games and limit runs scored by the opposing team.
  3. Consider Ballpark Factors: Ballpark dimensions and factors can greatly influence a player’s performance. Some ballparks are known for being hitter-friendly, while others favor pitchers. Take these factors into account when selecting your lineup, particularly when choosing power hitters or pitchers susceptible to giving up home runs.
  4. Look for Value Plays: Identify undervalued players who have the potential to outperform their price tag. These can be players who are in favorable matchups, hitting higher in the batting order, or experiencing recent success. Finding value plays allows you to roster top-tier players while staying within the salary cap.
  5. Diversify Lineups: Consider creating multiple lineups with different player combinations. This strategy, known as lineup diversification, helps reduce risk and increases the chances of hitting on the right combination of players. It’s important to strike a balance between diversification and maintaining exposure to top performers.
  6. Pay Attention to Vegas Lines: Keep an eye on the Vegas lines and over/under totals for games. High-scoring games can provide more opportunities for hitters, while low-scoring games may favor pitchers. Target games with high run totals or favorable odds for potential offensive explosions.
  7. Monitor Late Lineup Changes: Stay vigilant and adjust your lineup accordingly if there are any late lineup changes or player scratches. This ensures you have active players in your lineup and maximizes your potential points.

Remember, DFS success requires a combination of skill, research, and a bit of luck. It’s essential to continually evaluate your strategies, learn from your mistakes, and adapt to changing circumstances to improve your MLB DFS performance on FanDuel.

MLB DFS on Labor Day: A Six-Game Slate to Stack Your Lineups

As the long, hot days of summer give way to September, and Labor Day ushers in a nationwide breather, baseball fans know the season is getting serious. With the playoff race heating up, Monday’s six-game MLB main slate beginning at 6:40 pm

for Fan Duel and Draft Kings brings great intrigue for DFS players. The atmosphere feels different today—because it is. This isn’t just another Monday; it’s the unofficial end of summer, a day off for many, and a chance to dive deep into your DFS strategies. It’s time to stack those lineups and aim for glory.

We have three key stacks that stand out, offering distinct angles for your rosters. Let’s break them down into three categories: “The Safe Bet,” “The Sneaky Sleeper,” and “The Power Upside.”

THE SAFE BET

Detroit Tigers Vs San Diego Padres

Monday, September 2, 2024

6:40 PM ET| Petco Park

The Safe Bet: Padres Against the Tigers

You know it when you see it. That perfect mix of momentum, talent, and, well, a less-than-imposing opponent. For the San Diego Padres, the Labor Day slate feels like that rare confluence. Joe Musgrove, ever the steady hand, takes the mound for San Diego, who happens to be facing the Tigers’ Ty Madden—a rookie pitcher with plenty of promise but still grappling with the transition to the big leagues. Historically, Madden’s Achilles heel has been his control. A subpar strikeout-to-walk ratio and a propensity to leave pitches over the plate make him ripe for exploitation, especially against a Padres lineup with an eye for capitalizing on mistakes.

And that’s where Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Mason Mc Coy come into play. Machado’s bat has been heating up, and Bogaerts has been quietly putting together solid at-bats—making them cornerstones of any Padres stack. Meanwhile,  Mc Coy is due for a breakout game, especially given Madden’s tendency to struggle with left-handed batters. The Tigers bullpen isn’t much better, ranking among the bottom tier in most categories, so even if Madden escapes early damage, don’t expect much relief.

But it’s not just numbers that back up the Padres as a lock. It’s also their ability to feast on mistakes. Machado has a history of crushing fastballs in the zone, while Bogaerts has shown patience, waiting for his pitch. Together, they make this Padres stack one of the most reliable on the slate—a safe bet, if you will, in a sport where “safe” is rare.

THE SNEAKY SLEEPER

Pittsburgh Pirates Vs Chicago Cubs

Monday, September 2, 2024

7:40 PM ET| Wrigley Field

The Sneaky Sleeper: Cubs Against the Pirates

This is the kind of stack that makes you lean back and grin. It’s the one that, while everyone else is salivating over higher-profile matchups, you quietly slide in and reap the rewards.  Pittsburgh’s rookie right-hander Jared Jones, has shown flashes of brilliance, however still struggles to maintain consistency, especially when going up against better lineups.

Jones’ tendency to leave pitches in the middle of the zone could be his undoing against Ian Happ and Cody Bellinger. Happ’s switch-hitting capability gives him the edge, particularly from the left side, where Jones has struggled. He’s slugging nearly .500 against right-handers this season and has a knack for turning on mistake pitches. Bellinger, meanwhile, has been surging—finally showing shades of his MVP form after a rollercoaster of a few seasons. His recent stretch against right-handed pitching is exactly the kind of sneaky value you want to deploy in tournaments.

What’s intriguing about the Cubs’ matchup is the underlying data that flies under the radar. Jones has one of the highest hard-hit percentages against him among rookie pitchers, which plays right into the hands of a Cubs lineup looking to tee off. Quietly, this could turn into a stack that separates you from the pack, especially if the Cubs pile up runs early.

THE POWER UPSIDE

New York Yankees Vs Texas Rangers

Monday, September 2, 2024

8:05 PM ET| Globe Life Field

The Power Upside: Yankees vs. Rangers

When you talk Yankees, it’s hard to ignore the obvious. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton are the kind of names that make pitchers lose sleep. But here’s the kicker: On a day like Labor Day, facing off against the Rangers and a young pitcher like Jack Leiter, you might just see one of those explosive performances that DFS players dream about.

Leiter, son of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter, comes with pedigree, but he’s been inconsistent in his early starts. His fastball is electric, but command issues have plagued him, leading to home run trouble, especially in hitter-friendly conditions. And here’s where Judge and Stanton come in. Both are among the top percentile in exit velocity, hard-hit rate, and barrel percentage. Couple that with conditions favoring hitters you have the perfect storm for a power explosion.

Judge, as always, is the anchor. His ability to drive the ball to all fields means he’s a constant threat, even if he doesn’t get a cookie right down the middle. Stanton’s swing can be streaky, but when he’s locked in, as he’s shown in recent games, the ball jumps off his bat like few others in the league.

The real upside, though, lies in the Yankees’ ability to feast on young, inexperienced pitching. Leiter’s walk rate suggests trouble if he can’t locate early, which plays right into the Yankees’ patient approach. Throw in Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo to round out the stack, and you have a potent mix of power and patience—just the kind of formula that can break open a slate.

STACK

  • AARON JUDGE
  • GIANCARLO STANTON
  • JUAN SOTO
  • ANTHONY RIZZO
  • GLEYBER TORRES
  • ANTHONY VOLPE
  • JAZZ CHISOLM

Conclusion: A Multi-Pronged Attack

So here’s the thing. In DFS, there’s rarely a single approach that guarantees success. You need that combination of floor and upside, of safety and sneaky value. On this Labor Day slate, the Padres offer that rock-solid foundation—a stack that feels like a sure thing against a Tigers team struggling to keep runs off the board. The Cubs, meanwhile, offer that under-the-radar potential—a sleeper stack that could be the key to unlocking tournament success. And then there are the Yankees, where the power upside is undeniable, especially if as a team, they begin to see the ball well with the playoffs approaching.

Each stack brings something different to the table, and combining them into a well-rounded lineup could be the winning recipe for your DFS roster. Like a chess game, it’s all about making the right moves at the right time. And with these three teams, you’re armed with the pieces to checkmate the competition.
